WIA Youth Remediation/Work Experience Program Eligibility Information

Introduction

The Alabama Department of Economics and Community Affairs (ADECA), Workforce Development Division (WDD), has contracted with the State Department of Education (SDE) to operate the statewide remediation/work experience program for students (ages 14-21) who have either failed or are at risk of failing the Alabama High School Graduation Exam (AHSGE).

Students will attend remediation classes each morning, Monday through Friday, for four hours per day for a period of six weeks.

Students may also be assigned to a work experience activity for three hours each afternoon for six weeks. Students enrolled in work experience will be paid $5.15 per hour. No payments will be made to students while participating in remediation classes.

The Perry County Board of Education will be responsible for identifying students who are in need of remediation and selecting youth who will participate in work experience activities. Remediation is a pre-requisite for participation in work experience.

LEA's will also be responsible for ensuring that students are eligible for the Workforce Investigation Act (WIA) Youth Program. Eligibility requirements include the documentation of Social Security Number, Citizenship/Eligibility to Work, Selective Service Registration, Age, Low Income (Economically Disadvantaged), Family Size and Barrier.

The Perry County School System will assist students in the completion of enrollment forms and obtaining appropriate documentation to verify eligibility and will forward documents to the appropriate Alabama State Employment Service (ES) office.
